Silicone gel filled implants have now been re-approved by the FDA for primary breast augmentation since November of 2006. The enthusiasm for the gel implants has been overwhelming in my practice. The gel filled implants are softer and look and feel more natural. Silicone gel implants has other advantages over saline breast implants for breast enhancement. Patients are less likely able to feel or see the ridges of their implants. This can be a big problem for patients who have very little soft tissue coverage over their breasts. Silicone gel implants also are better at maintaing the upper pole fullness in your breast which is a common complaint before your surgery. Today, well over 80% of my patients in my practice in Louisville, KY, are choosing the silicone gel implants over the saline implants.
At one of our recent Journal Club meeting, someone asked “if silicone gel implants are so great, why are you still using saline implants?”
My patients choose saline implants because:
- Their friends and family members have saline implants and have had beautiful results. They would like to look like them.
- They have adequate soft tissue coverage over their breasts. If you already are a large B cup to C cup and just want to be larger, saline may be adequate.
- Some have fear of silicone. This is a rare issue but some patients still have lingering concerns.
- Severe asymmetry: saline implants are adjustable. Newer adjustable silicone filled gel implants will make this a non issue.
Saline implants for breast augmentation has had a long track record of producing beautiful and long lasting results and will continue to have place in my practice at the Cosmetic Breast Center at Calobrace Plastic Surgery Center in Louisville, Kentucky.
