About Gynecomastia

Gynecomastia results in enlarged breast tissue in males of all ages. The cause of this condition is not completely known (sometimes due to a hormone imbalance) but it can lead to men feeling self-conscious about their chest, or about removing their shirt during certain activities such as swimming. If you're someone who is suffering from gynecomastia in the Louisville, KY area, then our board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Nana Mizuguchi, can perform a breast reduction surgery where he will surgically excise the enlarged tissue and use liposuction to remove any stubborn fat that has been stored up. A male breast reduction operation can be successfully performed on-site at our Mizuguchi Plastic Surgery practice, offering you a more contoured, masculine-looking chest and helping to restore your confidence.

Ideal Candidates

Since excess breast tissue can be caused by medical conditions other than gynecomastia, a doctor should confirm the cause before treatment. You will be an ideal candidate if you have:

  • A healthy body weight
  • Fat and breast tissue that is resistant to diet and exercise
  • Good skin elasticity
  • Overall good health

What to Expect

Male breast reduction surgery usually involves a combination of surgical tissue removal and liposuction. Our plastic surgeon will make an incision (usually around the areola) and remove dense breast tissue with surgical excision. Then, our plastic surgeon can remove any excess fat with liposuction to create a smooth contour. After the surgery, you will have your chest bandaged and in a compression garment that should be worn at all times. You should rest and move your upper body as little as possible for at least three days. Most patients can return to work in 7 – 10 days and resume low impact exercise in 2 – 3 weeks. Our surgeon will go over specific recovery instructions and any prescribed medication.

Anticipated Results

Results from male breast reduction are usually seen at least three months after the surgery when the swelling has subsided. It may take 6 – 12 months for the skin to tighten and form to the new chest shape. The results of male breast reduction surgery will be permanent as long as you maintain a healthy, stable weight, but natural signs of aging (like loose skin) will continue.

Gynecomastia Treatment FAQ

How much does male breast reduction cost?
Excessive male breast tissue (gynecomastia) is a medical problem that requires a skilled surgeon. For this reason, Dr. Mizuguchi urges you to focus on how to get your best results rather than costs. To help make male breast reduction surgery easier to afford, Mizuguchi Plastic Surgery takes many payment methods. We can also help you find low-interest medical financing. While surgery for gynecomastia is usually not covered by health insurance, it's worth contacting your provider to check.

What causes gynecomastia?
Gynecomastia is caused by hormonal imbalances. In most cases, gynecomastia is linked to the long-term use of androgens and anabolic steroids. It may also be caused by using illegal drugs, like heroin and marijuana. Gynecomastia may also be caused by certain medical conditions (for example, hypogonadism, hyperthyroidism, and tumors) or some medications (for example, highly active antiretroviral therapy for AIDS, chemotherapy, and anti-anxiety medications).

How can I tell if I have gynecomastia?
Gynecomastia is excess breast tissue growth in the male chest, which can cause swelling, pain, and tenderness. Some men may have pseudogynecomastia (false gynecomastia), so Dr. Mizuguchi encourages patients to lose weight by following an exercise plan and healthy diet before seeking treatment for gynecomastia. If you have enlarged breasts at a healthy weight, Dr. Mizuguchi will perform a physical exam and order diagnostic tests. These may include blood tests, a mammogram, or a biopsy to look for other causes like breast cancer and mastitis (infection of the breast tissue).

Can gynecomastia be treated with exercise or pills?
Male breast reduction surgery is the most effective treatment for gynecomastia. Currently, the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) hasn't approved any medications for the treatment of gynecomastia. Although they aren't approved for gynecomastia, a few breast cancer medications (for example, Raloxifene or Tamoxifen) may give you minimal improvements. Strength training to build the pectoral muscles will not reduce the amount of breast tissue and could even make the breasts appear larger.

Will this fix puffy or pointy nipples?
Puffy or pointy nipples may be caused by glandular gynecomastia. If this is a concern for you, please talk to Dr. Mizuguchi during your consultation. He will personalize your surgical plan to use the best technique and incision pattern to improve your nipples. Large areolas can also be corrected during male breast reduction surgery. It is crucial to be open and honest with Dr. Mizuguchi about all your concerns and wants during your initial consultation, so he can ensure the results you want.
